The Himeville Fort was originally built in the late 19th century during a time of frontier settlement and change in the region. From 1902 to 1972, the fort served as a prison, playing a significant role in the social and administrative history of the area.

Following its closure as a prison, the building was preserved and transformed into a museum that reflects the rich and layered history of Himeville and the surrounding district.

Today, the museum tells the stories of the people, events, and everyday life that shaped the area — from early settlers and farming life to military history, local traditions, and community memories.

A key feature of the museum is its representation of the diverse communities that shaped the area. Exhibits include Stone Age fossils and artefacts, Khoi/San history with nearby rock art sites, Boer War and World War displays, wildlife, traditional tools, the early post office and telephone exchange, an old schoolroom, and an original prison cell. The central courtyard offers a peaceful, shaded garden space for visitors to rest.The museum is well maintained and supported by knowledgeable staff who provide helpful insights into the area’s past.
